Are you still using a traditional landline service from Bell for your home phone? How much are you paying each month and what features does that include? If you’ve considered switching to a cheaper VOIP Phone service but are afraid of the technical challenges of doing so, this article may be for you.
First of all, what is a VOIP Phone service? VOIP stands for “voice over IP (internet protocol) and all that means is that it is a standard way of using an internet connection to make and receive phone calls. Generally, you will receive a small hardware adapter from a VOIP phone company that you connect to your Internet router and you plug your phone into the adapter and you have a phone service!
Depending on the packages you have for your home phone, such as long distance calling, you could see savings of over $800 a year on your phone service by switching to a VOIP Phone service.
There are a few other benefits to switching to a VOIP Phone service over a traditional landline:
- It is much cheaper than a traditional phone line – as little as $11 a month.
- Includes many features that are costly add-ons for a traditional phone line: unlimited long distance, voicemail, call waiting and more.
- Keep your old phone number – that’s right, your current phone number can almost always be transferred to a VOIP service.
- Easy to move to a new location, no service call required!
- As long as you have power and an internet connection, you have phone service.
One difference to be aware of with a VOIP phone is that you must keep your 911 address up-to-date with the VOIP Phone provider. This is usually a simple form on the company website where you can update your address any time. It’s also important to note that a VOIP phone usually requires a fairly fast internet connection – Xplornet 5G and Starlink are both good wireless internet options, and most wired broadband connections like Rogers and Bell will also work well.
